As we dive deeper into the world of ghost nets, we want to explain the different types of commercial fishing gear so that you can better understand the threat they pose when left in the ocean.
1️⃣ Purse seine - giant wall of net that captures entire schools of fish.
2️⃣ Trawls - nets towed behind a boat that are used at the surface, middle, or bottom of a body of water.
3️⃣ Gill nets - giant wall of net that are almost invisible.
4️⃣ Longlines - a line with many baited hooks and lights that is laid out over very long distances and designed to target a specific species.
As you can imagine, each type of gear comes with its own unique threat to marine life, especially when lost, abandoned, or discarded into the ocean.
