Microplastic Part 4 🌊 Plastic doesn't break down into natural materials like water and carbon dioxide for a long time, or at least as long as plastic has been produced commercially. Instead, plastic breaks up into trillions of pieces that continue to get smaller. Eventually, they are invisible to the human eye. Sunlight and oxygen weaken the plastic, which becomes brittle and fragments over time. Wave action and marine wildlife further contribute to the break up of plastic. It is crucial that we not only remove plastic before it becomes tiny, but also stop plastic from entering the ocean in the first place. #Trashology101
