For decades Coho Salmon have been dying as they make their way upstream to Washington state. Recently, scientists figured out that there might be something in the stormwater run-off harming the salmon. After a lot of tests, researchers identified one chemical that was especially harmful: 6PDD-Quinone. This is a preservative found in tires.
Tire particles are considered a pretty significant source of microplastic pollution. Particles shed from car tires when we accelerate and brake. Rainfall and wind transport the particles to rivers, oceans, and even the atmosphere. Because the particles can be very tiny, they can enter the bodies of fish and us.
