You’ve heard of microplastic before, right? They are tiny plastic pieces usually 5mm or less in diameter. Well, they’ve been discovered in antarctic snow!
Microplastic has been detected in Antartica before, but never in freshly fallen snow, at least until now. Researchers found microplastic in all 19 snow samples.
It's important to note that because the samples came from fresh snow, the microplastic likely fell from the atmosphere with the snow 🤯
While some of the fibers likely came from local sources like research facilities, the microplastic also likely traveled around the globe to reach Antarctica. It's very concerning that places as remote and pristine as Antarctica aren't even immune to plastic pollution.
