The Hawaiian islands are a magnet for the world’s plastic waste and we recently took a scouting trip there!
The unique position of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean makes the islands a high impact area for plastic pollution.
Sitting in the middle of the North Pacific Gyre, the Hawaiian island chain is surrounded by circulating ocean currents that funnel marine debris to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch — the largest accumulation of ocean plastic in the world. Here, the islands act like a comb, sifting out debris as the current cycles past.
So, why did we recently travel to Hawaii?
1. To meet with local community members and organizations to better understand the unique sources and impacts of plastic pollution on the islands, what’s already being done to address them.
2. To determine how 4ocean can support existing education, sustainability, and cleanup initiatives that will reduce and prevent plastic pollution on the islands.
