El Quetzalito is known for being the town at the end of the Rio Motagua.
The Rio Motagua is a 300-mile long river that stretches across Guatemala and empties into the Caribbean Sea. Unfortunately, it’s one of the top sources for ocean plastic pollution in the world.
At the end of the Rio Motagua sits El Quetzalito, a remote community of about 78 working class families who make their living as fishermen and cattle, rice, and corn farmers. However, over the last 20 years, their nets have collected more plastic than fish. Plastic pollution also impacts their mangrove forests and a small coral reef that sits at the river mouth, which are both vital nurseries for many of the seafood species they rely on.
Because of this, 4ocean has strategically selected this village as a satellite location and hired over 25 local community members to join our crew. Their focus will be the Rio Motagua and nearby coastlines where plastic has accumulated.
