Mangroves are one of the biggest contributors to the ocean’s biodiversity because so many marine animals give birth or nest among their dense prop roots. They also shelter baby sea animals until they migrate to the reef or open ocean. ⠀

Plastic along the coastline is easily trapped in mangroves’ dense prop roots. With each tidal cycle, plastic debris and sediment become more tightly packed, which displaces the animals that rely on the roots’ protection to survive. This is one of the many reasons why cleaning up mangroves is vital to our ocean cleanup operation!⠀
