Ever wonder how we track the amount of plastic we collect on our cleanup missions?
Each time our cleanup crews head out on a mission, they follow a documentation process to ensure everything is done legally and safely.
Here’s the step-by-step process:
1. The crew arrives early in the morning because most impact areas take several hours (sometimes days) to clean.
2. Upon arrival, the crew will document the impact area (prior to cleanup) with a photo.
3. The crew then gets to work. Throughout the cleanup, they document the cleanup with photos and video (if applicable). All trash is placed into sacks for storage and future weighing.
4. Once the cleanup is completed, the crew documents the impact area again. This is not only to show the clean beach or waterway, it’s also to show that the trash was properly removed by our crews.
5. The trash filled sacks are then weighed. This process is documented by photo and 4ocean TrashTracker log sheet. The log sheet contains the date, time spent cleaning, amount of crew members working, weight of each sack, amount of sacks filled, total weight collected, and a dual authorization signature from the recorder and administrator who double checks the work.
6. The trash filled sacks are then transported back to the cleanup operation base where the plastic can be sorted and stored for future use in products or be responsibly recycled.
To date, we have removed 8,691,089 pounds of trash from the oceans and coastlines and we’re not stopping anytime soon. We have cleanup operations in Bali, Haiti, Guatemala, and Florida.
