Did you know that just over 1.5% of the world's ocean is a protected area? Moreover, of that area, 90% of it is open to fishing. Marine protected areas are critical because they protect habitats and endangered species that live in those areas. The remaining 10% is referred to as no-take zones. Within these zones, depleted fish stock can recover, coral reefs can recover from destructive fishing, and endangered species can take refuge. Ultimately all of these benefits mean food security for the coastal communities that rely on them. #4Ocean #StopOverfishing #OceanConservation 📸@paulnicklen ,@sea_legacy
