Monofilament fishing line is made of plastic and takes 600 years to degrade. In 2019, it was estimated that fishing line alone contributed 12% of global plastic waste. If you see it out in the wild, pull it out, and dispose of it properly.
Just about a month ago, my colleagues at the National Save The Sea Turtle Foundation found a critically endangered hawksbill that had line wrapped around its flipper. They took it to a sea turtle hospital and the flipper had to be amputated. Had they not found the turtle, it would have died. Not only do these lines hurt animals, but gets entangled on reefs and can harm and eventually kill the corals. Overall, fishing line is a huge problem for our marine wildlife and ecosystems.
