We had some questions and requests about the inside of the van. Here are some Glamour Shots from when the van was first built; I will take some more recent shots with the "lived in look" when I have more time.
I chose an rbcomponents build because of quality and versatility, and because form follows function with everything they do. Versatility, with a capital V is important when you only have 86 square feet to work with. I wanted to be able to remove the bed if necessary, or change the configuration if the kids are with is, (or not), or take a shower inside or outside.
The key to successful van life is understanding the difference between the "must-haves", and the "nice to haves", and the "I don't wants". Because everything is a trade off when you only have such a small space. I literally made a spreadsheet with my list before I went shopping for a van. I will go through that list in a series of future posts. For example, I did not want a fixed shower, I did require interior water so I could use the van all winter (we live in Bend) and camp in the snow and chase storms for snowboarding, and while I would have preferred a second bed below the one you see, I knew the kids would not travel with us 100% of the time so a comfortable, but flexible sleeping accommodation for them was doable but not my first choice.
In these pictures you will see that the van has many creature comforts that you have in your home. Microwave. Shower. Range top (can't see it in the photos, it's portable and stowed), refrigerator with freezer, toilet, AC and heating, seating and sleeping for 4, etc), kitchen table, loads of flexible storage, the seats all swivel, making the seating very versatile.
This van is just about perfect for our needs. It's the Swiss Army Knife of vans, and with 4 wheel drive we can go anywhere at any time in comfort, and bring our adventure gear with us.
And as I've mentioned, the van is still my favorite place to be (wherever that may be).
