One of the questions I hear often from people who are considering purchasing a van is "Do I really need four wheel drive?" This is often followed by something akin to "but the Sprinter van isn't a true 4x4..." or "It's just an all wheel drive platform..." or something like that.
THE FACTS: I've driven my 2017 170 4x4 in terrain that is gnarly. So gnarly the microwave was tossed out of its cabinet (twice on two different occasions!) but that is a subject for another day.... I snowboard about 60 days a year in the worst weather you can imagine (I chase the storms in search of epic power days). Deep snow. Ice. I've driven an hour off the pavement into the desert in Baja, Mexico in deep, deep rutted and crazy soft sand where many other vehicles were getting stuck.
And in all of that, I've never gotten stuck. Not once. And I've only aired down once, in Baja, because it seemed like a smart strategy because so many people were getting stuck.

HERE IS THE KEY: I've never not gone. Never turned back. Never turned around. I continue to be surprised at what my @rbcomponents Adventure Sprinter Van is capable of.
Sure, there are times when all four wheels are clawing for traction as I'm working the spooling turbo in just the right way to climb some gnarly rutted hill and the Mercedes computer is practically thinking out loud as it manages the power delivery to all four wheels.
But I've never not gone. Never even considered not going.
So maybe the right question isn't "Do I really need 4 wheel drive?" and instead is,
"Do I ever want to stop and turn around from chasing my dreams and memories in this time I have left to live out my life?"
I say: Never not go.
