Quake lake, in SW Montana, is a beautiful disaster.
In the evening of August 17, 1959 a 7.5 earthquake rattled the greater yellowstone region, shaking loose tons of mountain side.
The resulting landslide buried the madison river and killed a known 28 people. The campground was overflowing at the time, so a true tally of casualties is impossible.
Hebgen lake tilted backwards and the madison flowed upstream.. The result a couple miles below hebgen dam, was a newly formed lake, reaching depths close to 200 feet as the madison resumed it's course.
And holding fat trout, alongside fossilized campers.
