The World at Night project
About 20,000 people are permitted to climb the rugged Mt Whitney in California every year. At 14,505 ft (4421m) it’s the highest summit in the contiguous US and the Sierra Nevada. Here on a summer evening I was positioned in a spot to capture the crescent moon on top of Whitney while it was next to Jupiter in a beautiful celestial conjunction. Note the Galilean Moons visible around Jupiter in the single-exposure telephoto image. The dark night side of the moon is gently lit by the Earth.
