In the Amazon, where I photographed this sunset along the shores of the mighty Xingú River, people carve canoes with fire and ax from the trunks of massive trees. In the absence of roads, most travel is done on the river. When the canoes are not being used, they half-sink them to prevent air from rotting the wood.
