Video @bertiegregory. There's nothing quite like seeing predators en mass. Firstly, it's a pretty epic spectacle but more significantly, lots of predators indicates a productive ecosystem. Using these steller sea lions as an example, each individual needs to eat 6% of its bodyweight in fish every single day. Female steller sea lions weigh about 250kg/550lbs whilst the big bulls can weigh over 1000kg/2200lbs. The rock that I was diving around had about 200 sea lions on it so taking into account juveniles, a conservative estimate would suggest this colony takes well over 3500kg/7700lbs of fish every day. This goes to show just how special the west coast of British Columbia is. Shot by @becky_kagan_schott for an exciting new 360 experience for @natgeo coming first to China this summer. Stay tuned!
