Photo by @CristinaMittermeier. A young Mayan boy climbs towards the narrow opening on this “cenote”, an underground karst cave system, through which water slowly runs. During an assignment for @natgeo, @PaulNicklen and I dove in many of these cenotes to photograph the human remains of sacrifices made hundreds of years ago. There is a solemn feeling in these cathedral-like caves and to this day, the Mayan people believe that the cenotes are the entrance to “Xibalba", the underworld.
