The magic ingredients for life on earth—sunlight, water, minerals, and energy—are all here at this geyser, photographed at sunrise in the Great Basin of Nevada. Water heated deep underground spouts into the morning air, boiling hot. Ancient algae and bacteria cling to the sides of the geyser and tint it with rainbow colors. Please note that this exquisite geyser is very fragile, and it's located on private property and not open to the public. I photographed it with special permission from the owners.
