Via ferratta routes (Iron Road in Italian) are strongly associated with the First World War, when several were built in the Dolomite mountain region of Italy to aid the movement of troops. Now these routes, allowing the relatively inexperienced to accomplish interesting rock scrambles are becoming popular throughout the world.
