There on Skye, under a brilliant blue canopy, the sea tranquil and stretching off to island after island banked up to the coast, I saw not just a beautiful scene (which it was) but vistas of discovery before me. All these years later I’m still in the discovery stage, richly rewarded when I make my way to another outpost, finding outliers in the sea, both scenic and human. There are 89 inhabited islands.
