Did you know that guinea pigs need regular nail trims? If your piggie can’t place their foot flat on the ground or their nails are starting to curl, it’s time for a trim!
Here's the low-down:
🕑 When: Trim their nails every 2-4 weeks.
💅Why: Overgrown nails can change how your guinea pig walks, leading to joint stress and pain. They can also catch on things or curl into the foot - ouch!
✂️How: Go slow and use proper small-animal nail clippers. Trim only the sharp tip, avoiding the quick (the pink part inside the nail). If your guinea pig has dark nails, hold them up to the light to spot the quick. Offering some leafy greens can help distract them while you trim. If you’re unsure about the proper trimming technique, your vet can show you how.
💡 Tip: Adding a rough surface like a concrete slab in their enclosure can help wear nails down naturally as they move around.
