As a brand rooted in remix, we love seeing how people reinterpret familiar parts of the world around us - including our very own brand identity. To this end, we commissioned our Research Lead & interdisciplinary artist, Sam Mapp (@samappp), to do a reinterpretation of the Apply glyph - itself a modified "A." The creative prompt began with Sol Lewitt's iconic formulaic wall drawings. Quickly, Sam drew parallel inspiration from mandalas, schematic & architectural representations of the universe popularized by the Tibetans. Mandala-like imagery has proliferated in Modern Art, with contributions by Hilma af Klint, Sonia Delaunay, Alfred Jensen, John McCracken, Sam Gilliam, and Loie Hollowell (@loiehollowell) - among others. For a medium as associated with industrial reproduction as stickers, we love that Sam chose to reframe the brand with the soft & imperfect gestures of paint. Soon, they too will become stickers!
