Pictures are a kind of currency, each minted at a moment in time and reflecting the aesthetics & technologies of the times. At Apply, we break down larger pictures into smaller "denominations," suitable for other purposes entirely. Flower Shop, for instance, contains blossoms painted in the Renaissance, recast in crystal vases within in a foundational photograph, Articles of Glass, by one of the medium's forefathers, William Henry Fox Talbot. The black & white image eventually became part of The Pencil of Nature (1844), the first commercial book illustrated with photographs.
