Feminist theorist Hélène Cixous argues that men's retelling of the narrative turned Medusa into a monster because they feared female desire. Through her feminist literary piece, ‘The Laugh of the Medusa’ she explains that men are intimated by female-sexed texts and because of this the story of Medusa has turned into one that reinforces that patriarchal ideas that women should be afraid of asserting themselves.
