We are beyond excited to share this news! The money raised from our sample sale has enabled us to adopt an entire nursery table with @coralgardeners šā
ā
One nursery table is home to 100 broken corals. Once healthy enough, the corals will be replanted onto the reefs.ā
ā
Here are some coral facts via @coralgardeners:ā
ā
A Rich Ecosystem ā
Coral reefs occupy less than 0.1% of the earthās surface, yet they provide habitat for approximately 25% of known marine species.ā
ā
Coastal Protectionā
Coral reefs protect coastlines against big waves, storms and erosion. They are capable of absorbing 97% of the energy of the waves and can reduce wave height by 84%.ā
ā
Fighting Climate Changeā
Coral reefs are the oceansā lungs; they absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and transform it into the oxygen we breathe. By doing this they regulate air and water temperature for us all.ā
ā
"Almost half of the worldās reefs have been lost in the last 40 years. The main cause is a warming climate, in addition to overfishing and human pollution. We transplant coral cuttings onto degraded areas of reef. When these coral fragments grow, they help to recreate reef habitats. This allows other life to return and strengthens the reef against future damage." - @coralgardenersā
ā
THANK YOU to everyone who got involved and contributed through our sample sale - we've named the nursery table "BATOKO" ššā
ā
And big thanks to @oceanaimee for kindly allowing us to use this photo from her trip to Moorea a few months back, where she helped with the reef restoration and planting process. Find out how you can volunteer with the project over at @coralgardeners š
