The other day, the One Child Policy was ended in China. I thought I would ask my colleague, Abby, some questions about this momentous event and share with you. A few things you should know about her: she is responsible for our production management. Considering our average 5 star reviews, she is clearly a boss. She is 33, lives in Shenzhen, and has a 3 year old son, Ren, with her husband Jack.
J: Do you think women in China are excited about this change?
A: I don't know, maybe. But you know it is still very expensive to have two babies. So, I think some women will be excited and some will not.
J: Will you have another baby?
A: I was born in 1983 and I was a One Child Policy baby. Same with my husband. So we were already allowed to have a second baby. If you were born in the 80s and are a single child you can have two babies. So, I think this change is more precious if you are in your 40s.
J: How about your mother and father? Do they want you to have another baby?
A: Of course! My mother always says! My father just thinks whatever my mother thinks.
J: Some western women think the Chinese government controls women and their bodies with the One Child Policy. Do you think Chinese women think this too?
A: No, I don't think so. It is still your choice if you want to have one baby or no baby. You can also pay some money to have a second baby, maybe 50,000RMB ($7,500USD). It is your choice. If you can pay the money then you can afford to raise another baby. Maybe 30% of Ren's classmates have a brother or sister. In the end, you must think about what you can afford. I think if I can have one baby, give him a good education, a good life, then I am happy and that is enough. ??? From the road, xx Jay & Abby
