Tips to Prevent Jet Lag our latest Calm Masterclass, Sleep Better with @thesleepdoctor, Michael Breus, PhD. ✈️💤⠀ ⠀ 🧭Pay attention to direction of travel⠀ The direction of travel matters. East is least and West is best. So if you're traveling from New York to Los Angeles and traveling in a Westward manner, all you're doing is asking your body to stay up later, right? Because if it's 8 o'clock in New York, it's actually five o'clock in LA. So if you waited till 8 o'clock here, all you're doing is asking your body to stay up late. Unfortunately, when you travel in the opposite direction, it's much more difficult. So if you're traveling from Los Angeles to New York and you're going to bed at 11 o'clock, New York time, it's really eight o'clock your time. And that's not so easy. So always take a look at the direction of travel.⠀ ⠀ 🔴 Avoid the red-eye flight whenever possible⠀ It’s hard to get a good night sleep cramped on an airplane, so you’ll end up feeling the sleep loss for days. It’s rarely worth it. ⠀ ⠀ 🍏 Be mindful of the food that you eat and the alcohol that you drink. ⠀ Stay away from things that could potentially give you an upset stomach or gas. Bring your own snacks on board. Stay away from carbonated beverages. Also, if you are a drinker you really need to limit it to about one drink at maximum. One drink in the air is usually worth about two on the ground and remember alcohol is not your friend when it comes to sleep.⠀ ⠀ 💦 Hydrate⠀ A lot of people end up dehydrated while travelling. Be sure to drink lots of water. ⠀ ⠀ ♾Stretch⠀ Find ways to move while in the air. Try a figure four stretch where you place your ankle on top of your opposite knee and then lean forward to stretch out your hips and glutes. Or, stand up and walk to the back of the plane about every 90 minutes or so. It's good to kind of get that circulation going.
