The majority of sunscreens on the market are made with multiple chemical active ingredients (look for “benzones” in the ingredient list). What does this mean? Chemical sunscreen ingredients are absorbed into the skin where they break down UV rays to provide sun protection. This can cause skin irritation, particularly in sensitive skins, and in some cases the excess free radicals created can lead to visible signs of skin damage and may potentially have a hormonal impact.* In addition, there is also some research suggesting that some chemical sunscreen ingredients may contribute to coral bleaching.
