Sometimes our 🧠s are really dumb! You heard me right. But before you tell me, “No Gwen, you’re actually the dumb one”, hear me out! I tell my patients this all the time— It’s awesome we have the ability to think, plan, articulate emotions, etc., but no matter how intelligent we are, our brains are subject to thinking pitfalls❗️ Cue a prime example... I woke up today feeling quite sore. I found myself wondering, “Why am I SO sore today? I wasn’t this sore after my last (faster) half 🤔” And then it hit me. Without even realizing it my brain had started to foolishly set conditions about how I “should” feel post-race. 🦵🏼 Sometimes your body might feel fine after a race. Other times it will feel like you got run over by a 🛻 Bottom line— not all post-race days are identical, no matter how similar the time, conditions, or effort level! Recovery, however, will ALWAYS be important! Of course, now that I take a step back, I know full well why I’m so sore today. I raced 13.1 miles— that’s a lot, no matter how many times you’ve done it!— & I ran 18 miles last weekend, so no kidding my legs are tired! Sometimes my 🧠 is just tired and foolish 🙃 ✨ Next time you catch your brain spouting unrealistic expectations or conditions, give yourself some grace. We all do it! As you practice calling yourself out, it will get easier + better 🙂
