DAY 23 + 24 | DIY starter seedlings
Your challenge:
The shape of an egg carton makes it easy to situate on a sunny windowsill and avoids the need to buy seed trays which are often made of plastic. Ask friends and family to save their egg cartons and any plastic bags for you. It may be handy if you're planning on starting a lot of seedlings at once.
What you need:
💚 Egg carton (alternatives: coffee cups + toilet paper rolls)
💚 Seeds of your choice
💚 Potting Soil
💚 Plastic shopping bag or alternative soft plastic
How:
1. With a sharp tool, poke some drainage holes into the bottom of the egg carton
2. Cut off the container lid of the egg carton and place it under the bottom of the egg carton. This way, any moisture will drain out onto the lid underneath.
3. Fill each egg cup with potting soil and place seeds into the appropriate depth.
4. Water the container to get the soil moist, but do not soak them.
5. It is important to keep the seeds warm as they germinate, place the carton inside a plastic bag from the grocery store or even an empty chip packet.
Once they sprout, you can remove the plastic (wash this out and hold onto this for future use) and set your container in a sunny, warm spot until they are ready to be planted outside.
