I had a nice long chat with the husband yesterday about investments (property and stock market), our retirement plans and whether we could literally stop working right now and still afford our lifestyle. The funny thing is that there are a lot of people who want a quick buck. A LOT. And I get it, itâs alluring.

But realistically unless you have a very solid business or you switch jobs, increasing your income is not really possible. With ISAs giving next to nothing, a solid investment adviser would probably aim to give you between 5-8% return on existing investments.

If anyone approaches you and says 1) they can guarantee your capital will not be at risk in any type of investment, run for the hills! when you invest in any venture that is not government backed, your capital is always at risk. Always check them on the FCA Register. 2) and if they say they can guarantee anything above 10% return year on year, again be sceptical, anything above 20% as âguaranteed returnâ is a scam (and 10-20% is likely a very risky return and they should not be recommending as such unless they complete a suitability review first).
