Why We Created Rithm

There’s a saying that “if a picture is worth a thousand words, a song is worth a thousand pictures.” That, in a nutshell, is why we created Rithm.

Music has amazing expressive power. When you hear a song, you think of a friend, a moment, a memory or a feeling. Songs connect us with each other and enrich us emotionally.

In these ways, music is deeply social. It’s about you and your friends. It’s about rocking out, flirting and laughing. A lot of the stuff that came alive for me as a mixtape-obsessed teenager in the 90s.

It’s an interesting time for digital music. Streaming services are everywhere. They offer vast music libraries, solid discovery tools, useful playlist features and nice interfaces. Spotify, Rdio and Deezer are a few of the leaders with some social bent. Pandora and Songza are impressive for passive listening. More recently giants like Apple and Google are stepping into the game.

But where is the fun, the expressiveness and the social force of music in these experiences?

We created Rithm with a different focus. We wanted to capture the social connectivity of sharing music directly with friends. We wanted to make it fun and delightful to send and receive songs with personal messages and expressions. We wanted to bring back some of that mixtape magic.

Inspired by some trends we saw with MavenSay, the social recommendations platform we launched last year, and by the explosive behavior we’ve seen around mobile messaging, we spent last spring and summer conceptualizing, designing, building and launching Rithm.

We set out to provide a fun social mobile experience for music, one that recognizes how youth and millennial audiences engage with and promote content today.

It’s been an awesome journey so far with some kick-ass growth and interesting insights we’ll share in future posts!

We love hearing from users, potential collaborators and fellow entrepreneurs, designers and developers: feedback@rithm.me.

Share the music!
