Before he was one of the 20th century’s greatest landscape architects, Brazilian modernist Roberto Burle Marx was an artist. Arranging graphic, geometry-infused gardens and plazas, where swaths of plants crop up like fields of color on a canvas, he was also among the first to call for conservation of Brazil’s rainforests. The mineral roof garden of the Banco Safra headquarters, seen here, embodies the distinctive style of this legend of landscape.
