Kenzo Tange’s design for the Kagawa Prefectural Government Office aspired to set the principles of postwar democracy — openness and collaboration — into the material environment. Yet it also cast Japanese conventions anew: traditional wooden pillar-and-beam construction met modern materials, cast in concrete instead. Still standing more than 60 years later, the building’s interiors feature murals by Genichiro Inokuma and furniture by Isamu Kenmochi.
