“It’s not always about going to the studio and producing work,” says artist Lorna Simpson. “It’s the thinking about what the pieces are going to be or coming to that place of being able to see them in my head.” Originally designed as a studio space, today Simpson’s David Adjaye-designed townhouse is a sculptural, light-filled showroom for her work, and a place she turns to consider pieces in progress. Opening in the rear to a serene Japanese-inspired garden, the structure is testament to the power of contemplative space.
