2019 marks the 100-year anniversary of the Bauhaus, an influential art and design school that was founded in 1919 in Weimar, Germany. The school curriculum focused on reuniting fine art and functional design, encouraging students to create practical objects with the soul of artworks. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Of the many iconic designers that came up under the Bauhaus philosophy, perhaps none have had a greater impact on modern furniture design than Marcel Lajos Breuer. As one of the first and youngest students at the Bauhaus, Lajkó (a nickname derived from his middle name by friends at the university) designed one of the 10 best-known chairs of the 20th century — the Cesca Chair. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A combination of bent tube and cane, inspired by the sculptural curves of bicycle handlebars and made ubiquitous by mass manufacturing, the Cesca Chair remains a staple of our design catalog to this day. Though the Bauhaus school was forced to close in 1933 due to pressure from the Nazi regime, its ideas, along with Breuer's chair, have continued to spread all over the world.
