Morris Lapidus was once described as the "architect of make-believe." Lapidus was a Russian immigrant who became known for defining the Miami Modern resort-hotel aesthetic from the '50s and '60s. For a man who espoused that "Too much is never enough" and embraced the virtues of vulgarity (lots of color, lots of curves, lots of surprises), he exercised a certain restraint in designing this sultry stairwell. It's baroque; it's minimalist; it's fantastic.
