An American artist, carpenter and social worker active in the initial decades of the 20th century, Louise Brigham was an early proponent of the modular approach to furniture design. In her 1909 book Box Furniture, she explains how to make low-cost, minimal and attractive furniture using recycled materials. She had perfected this craft while staying at a remote coal mining camp in Finland where she built her furniture from cast-off shipping boxes. Brigham exhibited her designs in model rooms, one of which was her apartment in New York, furnished entirely for a total cost of $4.20.
