The Ise Jingu shrine, located in the heart of a sacred forest in Mie Prefecture, is considered the most important Shinto site in Japan. Every 20 years for the past millennium, these buildings have been rebuilt exactly to the existing designs and pieces of the old structures redistributed to other shrines across Japan. This ritual of renewal, called the Sengu, is undertaken with traditional tools and takes over eight years to complete. The next Sengu is scheduled for 2033.
