The highly successful J39 chair, popularly known as the People’s Chair, was designed by renowned Danish furniture designer Børge Mogensen in 1947. The design of the chair is said to be heavily influenced by Shaker furniture that somehow found its way from New York to Denmark in the ‘20s. This influence was reciprocated when Scandinavian design gained enormous popularity in the United States starting in the ‘50s and ‘60s. For the most part, however, Americans who grew up admiring the clean lines and simple functionality of the Scandinavian modern style never realized that some of its roots could be traced back to the Shaker communities on our own shores. 📷: @abelsloane1934
