The home of Walter and Ise Gropius in Lincoln, Mass. was built in 1938 after his appointment as chairman of the Harvard Graduate School of Design a year earlier. Most of the young family's furniture came to Massachusetts with them from Weimar, Germany, and was originally made in the workshops of the Bauhaus (founded and directed by Gropius from 1919 to 1928).⠀

The house, a living display of Bauhaus principles, was a utopian refuge for the small family — their “Eden,” according to daughter Ati, who was thirteen when they moved in. ⠀
