Summer solstice is here, and we are leaving the office for a while. In ancient Greece, the summer solstice was marked annually by women who danced and sang in mourning the death of Adonis, one of Aphrodite's two mortal lovers.
As the story goes, the youthful Adonis was gored by a wild boar while hunting and died bleeding in Aphrodite’s arms. Legend has it that he was later resurrected and made immortal by Zeus to mollify a distraught Aphrodite. Although sentenced to Hades, the underworld, for four months of the year, Adonis was permitted an annual eight-month reprieve above ground to be reunited with his lover. He is now known as the Greek god of rebirth.
