Originally one of the largest ships in the Union Navy, the Merrimack was a conventional steam frigate commissioned in 1856 & was burned and sank at dock. It was then raised and converted into the CSS Virginia during the Civil War where it was involved in the first engagement between ironclad warships known as “the Battle of the Monitor & the Merrimack.” The overall black & gray represent the ship itself while the blue pinstripe represents the deep roaring sea.
