This is one of the last photos I took with my precious Austin, and it’s one of my favorites (you can’t see it, but underneath my mask, I have the biggest smile on my face). Austin is finally taking a bottle and drinking my milk - that liquid gold! This photo captures one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences of my life.
⠀
The day after Austin passed, his nurse, Keisha called me. She was the last nurse (or as I often called them, “angels”) to care for Austin and wanted to share her thoughts with me. She said, “Emily, I wanted to call you to remind you what fun we had with Austin... giving him a sponge bath together...feeding him his bottle. You MOTHERED your son. Don’t ever forget those precious moments together.”
⠀
I would give anything to be holding Austin tight in my arms today. Loving him and kissing him endlessly. Instead, I hold him tight in my heart, along with Keisha’s words.

I’ve realized that everyone's journey into motherhood and through motherhood is unique - this is certainly not the way I anticipated celebrating my first Mother’s Day. It’s a confusing day for me, and that’s ok. So whether you’re lucky enough to celebrate with your Mom or with your children, reminded of the pain of losing your mother or child, or struggling with infertility - I’m with you.
⠀
Happy Mother's Day 🤍
