Traveling is hard on the body. Our bodies work hard to maintain homeostatic equilibrium. Therefore regularity and routine are very soothing to our metabolisms. The less unfamiliar stimuli the body has to deal with, the less work there is to be done. Travel disrupts virtually everything. Environmental unfamiliarity challenges our minute decision making and stimulates sympathetic nervous system tone. New environments bathe our body in pseudocommensals that stimulate our immune system in new ways. We get exposed to all sorts of toxins and biomes. Circadian biology gets wrecked with time zone and light cycle changes. This is on top of the more obvious inconveniences like sleeping in random places and stuffy hotels, not having the same precise control of food intake, not always having the ability to get your normal workout in. When I travel, my goal is to stay healthy, happy, and productive. Travel is hard enough on the body, so my hard workouts take a back seat. Finding a gym, or making due in a hotel gym is usually the best to be done. I do my best, but ultimately I'll choose sleep and rest over a workout when on the road. There's a fine line between self care and complacency at times. You have to really ask yourself what your body needs most. You only get one meat suit....so take care of it! All that's to say that it's good to be home and I couldn't be happier to be back to my normal fitness regimen. I've definitely lost my edge and am the lightest I've been in years.
