We keep getting ads about a vitamin C skin lightening soap, so we decided to make this post. Facial cleanser can only do a couple of things when it comes to being functional: anti-bacterial and exfoliating. A face wash that hydrates your skin, lightens, combat aging etc. is all false marketing!
1. Hydration - face wash contains surfactants that are bound to increase trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL). A good face wash contains gentler surfactants, balanced with other surfactants and hydration ingredients to help reduce the effect of TEWL, but no face wash will actually hydrate your skin, 0, because the act of washing your face, even with pure water will increase skin water loss.
2. Skin lightening: de-pigmenting is a deep skin business, ain’t no soap or face wash can have enough contact time with the skin for the ingredients to actually penetrate and do the work. Plus, formulation is pretty much impossible to allow ingredients like vitamin C to work because of the pH requirement for vitamin C to be effective. However, some face wash contains acids and have a low pH, these face wash can help to exfoliate the skin and increase skin cells turn over, but not to a point of effective skin lightening.
3. Anti-aging: same as above, no ingredients can really stay long enough to provide anti-aging benefits, plus formulation for these anti-aging ingredients in a cleanser format is extremely hard due to the + and - charges from the surfactants, so these ingredients are unlikely to work, or have enough % to work anyway.
