Let's be honest: sharks may seem like the closest you can get to real-life monsters, but tales of their horror are greatly exaggerated. In fact, sharks are a remarkable group of fish that have been around for over 450 million years, even before dinosaurs 🦖! They are apex predators and play a vital role in the health of marine ecosystems. Our existence, in part, is dependent upon theirs and yet, 143 out of the 500 species of sharks are under serious threat by human activity, from illegal hunting to overfishing.
🦈 Today is World Shark Awareness Day and we want to raise awareness of their plight and help protect them. We can all help by learning more from and supporting organisations like @sharkstewards, @wildaid and @projectaware. And of course, reducing our plastic consumption. Thanks to your help we have saved over 8 million plastic bottles from being produced and disposed of in landfill and our oceans around the world. 🌎💚
