A late afternoon capture of our studio WA-ROUSOKU or Japanese candle handcrafted in Nanao, Ishikawa by artisan candle makers Takazawa Candle, established in 1892. Eco friendly WA-ROUSOKU are crafted from plant-based raw materials such as the fruit of the sumac tree, rice bran, canola flower oil, and from the fruits of the urushi tree. The candle flame burns bigger and brighter due to the structure of the unique wick which is much thicker in diameter than western offerings and when extinguished, releases only a very subtle odour. The wick is made by wrapping dried material from a plant of the Juncaceae family referred to as 'lamp wick' or rush weed around washi shaped into a cylinder. This way of making wick allows air to pass up from the lower part of the candle through the wick's hollow centre, in addition to enabling the wick to absorb more melted wax, which in turn improves combustion and gives the candle a large, powerful flame ]
