I’ve always thought it’s hypocritical to say “I’m going to be a better version of myself in the new year… but not today.”
So obviously something about your New Year’s resolutions aren’t sitting well with you if you’re avoiding starting now.
I think a big part of this is we’ve been programmed to think that in order to be successful at XYZ, we need to do more more more.
“
If I want to get fit, I need to work out with a trainer 4X a week.
If I want to lose weight, I need to cut everything I enjoy out of my diet.
If I want to drink less or stop drinking, I need to stay away from going out with friends.
“
And guess who’s going to crash and burn after a few weeks or months of that? You.
When in actuality, just being mindful and having a comfortable plan in each of these categories will get you where you want to go, probably more effectively than the extreme ways I listed above.
That’s not to say that having a trainer isn’t the way to go - maybe you need the accountability, the structure, and the in-person form corrections. But training with a trainer 4X a week surely isn’t the most financially sound option long-term. Maybe you just need a great program or class with a solid community to uplift and support you.
And of course tightening up your diet is going to help you achieve certain weight loss goals, but only if it doesn’t drive you to feel emotionally about your food and break. I’d rather see you prioritize your protein intake and limit sugars.
Now don’t get me started on avoiding social gatherings just because you’re trying to cut back on alcohol. People need people, and trying to achieve this new and improved version of yourself by yourself is tough. A supportive friend group will not pressure you into drinking, and they’ll find things to do that don’t revolve around alcohol.
I’m personally starting my New Year’s resolutions today, and my first little addition is waking up an hour and a half before my first scheduled appointment of the day. I tend to push it pretty far since I mostly work from home now, but that leaves me feeling rushing in the morning. I’m excited to get back that “me” time in the early hours of the morning before my day starts ♥️
