This love story is between Zhinü (the Weaver Girl from the heaven) and Niulang (the Cowherd from the earth). Their love is forbidden according to the order of the heaven. Therefore, they were punished by the Queen of Heaven and separated by a uncrossable river. However, their bold and devoted love had won sympathy of magpies of the heaven such that innumerable magpies gather and form a "bird bridge" across the river on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month each year, for the couple to reunite on that day. Their love story and this reunion day is commemorated as Qixi Festival, also called the Chinese Valentine's Day.
